Career Day Helps Put Students on the Right Road

by Ralph Gonzalez

The 2005 edition of Career Day, “The Meter’s Running . . . Where You Want to Go Is Up to You,” will roll out on October 27 at Montclair State University from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Some 300 students from area colleges are expected to be on hand. Tickets are $7.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door.

Ingrid Bernstein

ADVERTISING THAT GRABS

Immediately after breakfast provided by Dunkin’ Donuts and the first of two breakout sessions, keynote speaker Ingrid Bernstein, senior VP/director of creative and strategy at iDeutsch, will outline her successful development of interactive advertising programs. As creative director for the interactive branch of Interpublic’s Manhattan-based advertising agency, she has produced dynamic programs for IKEA, Almay, Monster Worldwide, MCI, Revlon, Snapple, Zyrtec, Tylenol and Novartis, which helped spawn the group’s exponential growth.

A graduate of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with degrees in microbiology and architecture, Bernstein leverages her multifaceted background in design, architecture, production and account management to oversee iDeutsch’s creative vision and manage the production and technology to deliver it to the client.

Prior to joining iDeutsch in 1998, Bernstein designed and produced interactive marketing initiatives for a wide variety of media and entertainment companies, including TV Guide, Fox News, Fox Sports, HarperCollins, Warner Music and SONY.
She was recently nominated to the IAB Agency Advisory Board and frequently serves as a judge for the ANDY’s, One Show Interactive and AIGA Annual Design Competition.

SUCCESSFUL JOB SEARCH TIPS
Following the second breakout session and lunch and fashion show, Sandra Podesta will show how carefully crafted job search letters and e-mail can lead to the desired job in advertising. President of eBusinessWriting.com, Podesta notes that a resumé supplies only 20% of the information on which hiring decisions are made. “Job search letters constitute an unparalleled opportunity to get a foot in the employer’s door, to emphasize strengths to stand out from the competition and to land an interview and a job offer.”

Podesta has used her writing talents for over 20 years to convince people to make decisions and act on them. She has created marketing campaigns for ad agencies and Fortune 500 firms, including Citicorp, CBS, Ernst & Young, FEDEX, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and SONY. She is co-author of 201 Killer Cover Letters (McGraw Hill, 2003). Copies will be available at Career Day at a special price.

FULL-DAY AGENDA
Two breakout sessions headed by professionals from area agencies will provide career direction in agency management, creative and production, internet web design, marketing, media and public relations. Sessions are scheduled for 9:15 to 10:00 am and 11:30 am to 12:15 pm.

During lunch, MSU marketing students will model the latest corporate, business and business casual fashions provided by the Men’s Wearhouse and Annie Sez.

From 1:00 to 4:00 pm students will be able to attend a Job Fair featuring employers from broadcasting, recruitment, media, marketing and advertising. Student portfolios and resumés will be evaluated during the final two hours of the program.
“Career Day offers students an excellent chance to learn about careers in advertising, marketing and public relations from the pros themselves,” explains Chair Anna Marie D’Elia of Block Advertising and Marketing. “It’s an opportunity for us, too, to give back.” Volunteers for breakout sessions and event sponsors are still needed. For more information, to become a sponsor or volunteer for a breakout session, contact Patricia Hanley at the Ad Club office: 201.998.5133 or enroll online at www.njadclubcareerday.com.
