President's Message AdTalk September 2006

September has arrived and another summer has blown right through. Each year spring lasts a little longer and fall arrives a little sooner. All at the expense of summer. Our window for enjoying the outdoors seems to slam shut before we’re mentally ready to let go. The long days on the beach, the hot nights finished off with a trip to the ice cream parlor give way to congested roadways, cold temperatures and mounds of leaves that create an obstacle course for drivers. If you can’t tell, I’m a summer person and my depression sets in by Labor Day. However, I will make it through the harsh winter, but it’s because I know that Memorial Day is only 280 days away!

I do kid, because there are two good reasons to look forward to the fall. One is the anticipation of lower fuel prices and the other is the start of the NJ Ad Club’s new season. We began with a hugely successful Summer Networking Barbecue. The Mansion at FDU with its grande dame building and its spectacular gardens was the ideal location. Over 160 people from nine different communications and marketing associations enjoyed the picture-perfect evening. Our strategy to team up with these groups has really paid off. We will continue to co-sponsor events with a variety of different associations, starting with a Networking/ SmarTalk program on September 26 at Bloomfield College. Ilise Benun will be speaking on self-promotion and marketing tips. If you skipped July’s event, you won’t want to miss this one.

If you recall, one of my mantras from last year was for newer and younger member participation. I saw many new faces at our programs, and I’m happy to report that the board of directors has added many new members as well. A hearty welcome to Brian DeAngelo, Ritta & Associates; Tim Gearhart, BOSS Staffing; Dan Finn, Greater Media Radio, NJ; John Lonsdorf, R&J Public Relations; and Sandra Schler, AJ Images. I know these folk will work hard for the Club for years to come.

The Wake-Up Call workshops are in full swing. September 27 will feature Larry Bailin, Single Throw, Inc., on “How to Attract the Right Customer at the Right Time!” Career Day will again be presented at MSU on October 26. This year’s keynote speaker will be Jennifer Ryan of BBDO. Once again proceeds will support the Pat Tesman Educational Achievement Fund.

The most exciting news this season is with our new member benefits. We have aligned ourselves with two very reputable organizations in making available to you both health insurance and a discount-shopping network. As an Ad Club member, the initiation fee will be waived and you’ll be able to receive lower premiums on the insurance program you choose and rebates on all of your on-line purchases. For more information, please read the article inside this issue.

Lastly, I’d like to say that it’s been a rewarding first year as president. I appreciate all the kind comments on my behalf and look forward to hearing from many of you as to your desires and wishes for a better-serving advertising association.

Gary Denburg
