Female General Managers
Rare in Radio
The Most Influential Women in Radio group
(MIW) has released a General Manager Gender Analysis
Summary showing that opportunities for women to rise
to the top operational positions in radio are still
far below men. The MIW Composition Analysis Study is
based on the latest information provided by MStreet
Publications.
“The analysis, which includes all
groups in all markets who own 12 or more radio stations,
clearly shows that the radio broadcasting industry is
‘behind the curve’ in advancing women to
top management spots,” commented Joan E. Gerberding,
President of Nassau Media Partners and spokesperson
for MIW.

In Search of
New Jersey Wines, Part II
We’re now off to the Amwell Valley
Winery, the first farm winery in New Jersey. Actually
it resembles a ranch in a western movie, though the
land itself reminds me of Vermont. Winemaker Jeff Fischer
and his father Michael, a Merck scientist in his late
70s, started growing grapes, then decided to make their
own wine. Although we don’t get any ice wine,
we do try their Port, which is wine fortified with brandy.
Amwell’s is 19.8% alcohol and quite delicious,
though not exactly wine. Once again Tom makes cooing
sounds and I’m starting to believe that he’s
not just a big pigeon disguised as a journalist but
is actually onto something.

The Art of the
State
Ever since humans were, well, thinking
creatures, they expressed themselves through art. From
the ancient cave paintings of hands — to Man Ray
and Robert Mapplethorpe, from Tibetan music to Shakespeare,
from Paul Robeson to Don Miller. Art is the chronicler
of the ages, whether words, music, mime or film. Without
it we wouldn’t have the magnificent Book of Kells
and its incredible illuminated pages. We wouldn’t
have Carmen, Orpheo & Euridice, The African Queen,
“Guernica” or Monet’s “Lilies.”
